If you like to play online strategy games, then Chocolatier is one game you need to try. It is an economic simulation and management game, with an adventure feel and some arcade mini-games thrown in as well.

Chocolatier tells the story of the Baumeister family, a family famous for their history in the chocolate-making industry. It is the 1880's, and the Baumeisters have fallen into hard times, having lost most of their chocolate recipes and only having a run-down chocolate factory in San Francisco to their name. Evangeline Baumeister has just taken over the family business and has hired you to help her return the Baumeisters to their former glory as world-renown master chocolatiers.

The game isn't like your typical online strategy games. There is a surprisingly huge amount of depth and story to this game. You will get to travel the world searching for the best ingredients as well as long-lost family recipes. As the game progresses, the story of the Baumeisters will also slowly unfold.

Chocolatier is segmented into a series of scenarios and goals, with each stage of the game more complicated and challenging than the last. The game starts with Evangeline Baumeister asking you to purchase some raw ingredients, and then tasking you with making the chocolate. You are then tasked to fine a good market to sell the finished chocolate.

That sums up the main mechanics of the game. You need to obtain raw ingredients at low prices, efficiently make the chocolates, then sell them at the best prices possible. However, things get mroe interesting and complicated pretty fast. Your search for raw ingredients will take you to exotic places like Java, Colombo and Quito, and the long-lost recipes that you manage to obtain will require even more exotic ingredients.

Making the chocolate is another game in itself. This part of the game presents a nice break from the tedious number-crunching economic simulation and introduces a small arcade mini-game that tests your reflexes. You will need to send the right ingredients onto platters in your chocolate factory. For example, 1 sugar and 2 cacao can make you a decent chocolate. This is complicated by the fact that these platters are spinning all the time. The more correct platters you achieve in this game, the more efficient your factory is.

Once you play the game a little, you will realize that the key to doing well is to know the markets. As you progress through the game, you will gain access to 14 exotic cities around the world... from Hong Kong in the exotic Far East, to Accra in equatorial Africa all the way to the mountains of Quito. Each of these cities will have different prices for raw ingredients and finished chocolates. Being able to buy and sell at the right time with the right price will turn your fledgeling chocolate company into a multi-million dollar empire.

So collect all the priceless long-lost chocolate recipes, establish your factories and markets, and create the best chocolate in the world!

Chocolatier is a great game to try if you like to play online strategy games, and once you've mastered it, its sequels in the Chocolatier series continue the story of the Baumeisters into the 20th Century.
